Washed in the Hurricane looks beyond “The City in the Forest” to an entire civilization embedded in the natural world. Part 1 transports the reader into wild places far from civilization. Part 2 explores the many ways nature pervades what humans regard as our exclusive domain. Part 3 tracks the cascading impacts of fossil-fueled technology on the natural systems that sustain our lives. Part 4 is a prose essay weaving Wing’s personal journey into a larger quest, tracing the art of poetry to its prehistoric origins and challenging the poets of today to revive their ancient role as emissaries of nature to the human world.
